"ON THE ROAD TO YOU"
March 31, 2006. A majestic mastering session happened today. Chris came in (together with his wife Becca) with his 16/44.1 mixes and immediately transferred them to the DAW. Aji started playing them, and soon the control room was filled with wonderful music that came from an eclectic mix of influences, country, rock, folksy roots, jazz, blues, world, and bluegrass.
According to Aji: "The mixes sounded very smooth and well-balanced, especially considering that these weren't even 24-bit files. Chris' years of experience is evident in the quality of his work. There were very minor problems if ever, and so I got to be really creative here. Which is a very rare opportunity, since with mastering I usually get so preoccupied fixing mix problems. The fact that the songs were very nice too is an added bonus."
"On the technical side, the album was mastered to an average RMS level of -12dBFS, which is quite conservative by today's standards. Making it louder would just not work with this kind of material, I mean, volume is not a requirement here, it just won't do justice, and Chris totally agrees. On some songs, I actually had to reduce the level. It is quite interesting to listen to a mastered song whose level is lower than the mix master, as our ears are easily fooled by level, i.e., a louder version of a song will usually sound 'better' than the softer one."
We thank Chris for trusting his project with us. We wish you all the best on this album of yours!

"CHRIS CORNELIUS" (DEBUTCD) ,
"ONE WORLD / THE DAWN OF ASCENSION", "AWAKEN"
September 4, 2006. After a 3-day marathon, Aji completed mastering three albums by master songwriter Chris Cornelius.. Here's some comments straight from the horse's mouth...
As evident on our last project, "On the Road to You", Chris' production and musical sensibilities shine throughout. Some of the material's arrangement is so unbelievably complicated and dense, imagine a song with folksy acoustic and electric guitars, a regular and fretless bass, conventional drums, Indian percussions, and a techno beat, along with a lead vocal track and a choir backup at that! The material is also fantastically varied stylistically, going from pop to folk to rock to techno to Indian/Arabic, and everything in between! Imagine that
In sonic terms, as I expected, the mix masters were quite nice to begin with, there was no major surgery required on any of them. Historically, the mix masters' (all three albums) completion span a long time, the earliest ones (from 10 years ago!) being transfers done from analog 2-inch tape onto ADAT, which, ironically, were the ones that needed the "phat" switch more than the later works (done purely on a digital machine).
We patterned the pre-masters after "On the Road to You", with the loudness set conservatively at -12dBFS and using a similar tonal profile. On some tracks, we had to do some black magick (actually, edit in spectrum mode) to remove some noises that just bothered Chris all those years. He also wanted everything to sound really "phat" and punchy. On a few tracks I had to use a multiband compressor to tame some loud guitar and fretless bass lines. But overall, the general approach I took on this project was very subtle and conservative, a very light touch.
It was a delight to work with Chris. Truly a songwriter, producer and engineer par excellence! Thanks so much for this wonderful experience, buddy! Nameste!
We wish you all the success with these albums. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to help you with your songs.
